I started out googling and found some rule engines for java like jess, drools, open rules etc. jess was a trial version so i settled with drools. Getting it up, using different plugins on eclipse wasnt so easy for me as there were many dependencies and version conflicts. So i thought i will post a easy step by step guide on how to do it.

To continue you will need Windows XP ( might work on linux also havent tried) , eclipse 3.4.1 ganymede ( i tried with this version it worked ).

Procedure is as follows

1. Unzip eclipse and start eclipse.
2. Go to help>software updates>add software.
3. Click on add site
4. It works like repos and here you need links of one or two repos.

5. To solve dependencies you need the Jboss tools repo which can be got from
http://www.jboss.org/tools/download
example repo := http://download.jboss.org/jbosstools/updates/stable/

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UUQK4xzPo2M/Sfs0tF7RrFI/AAAAAAAAAwc/Eiz3-N26ukw/s320/droolsdep.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330912533212671058" />

6. Install the repos which have drool in their name. There should be at least 3 of them.

7. Install drool workbench from http://www.jboss.org/drools/downloads.html by manually downloading or using repos.( sometimes repos dont work)

8. Restart eclipse and follow the link below to create a sample project.

9. I used eclipse 3.4.1 ganymede and installed 3.2 workbench manually that is by downloading and extracting it in the plugins folder of eclipse installation. The installation was done on windows xp machine.

10. http://www.redhat.com/docs/en-US/JBoss_Developer_Studio/en/drools_tools_ref_guide/html_single/index.html it's a nice link with all tuts having screen shots.

11. When u get the "helloworld" project go to the java file and run it. Then u will see the output.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UUQK4xzPo2M/Sfs087HWc5I/AAAAAAAAAwk/Uvf_8VESvMU/s320/drooloutput.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330912805188432786" />

Seminar on Software agents by me

<embed src="http://www.slideboom.com/player/player.swf?id_resource=61535" width="425" height="370" name="onlinePlayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"allowScriptAccess="always" quality="high" bgcolor="#ffffff" allowFullScreen="true" flashVars="title=softwareagents&url=http://www.slideboom.com/presentations/61535/softwareagents&mode=0&idResource=61535&siteUrl=http://www.slideboom.com&embed=1&startAuto=0&autoReplay=0&autoOpenShareScreen=1" >

I did a seminar as a course requirement on a topic "Software Agents an introduction to smart software" My guide liked it. And all my friends liked it. I spoke mainly about definition, kinds and some concepts of software agents. The ppt was very simple and handy mainly to me. That is what you see above. I took three examples of different projects my friends are doing to tell about agents. And at the end i showed the sitepal video as an example for intelligent agents. And i tried to show demo of a web traffic generator which i wasnt quite successful in because of the lack of internet. Over all it was a good presentation is what i felt.

finally it seems that i have something which looks like a "basic ruby parser"

LPG parser generator is quite good, or it seems to be good now! From what i have realized and what prasanna ( my team lead ) rightly pointed out, the LPG lacks a documentation of its design & API. i think the assumption is, using eclipse will make it unnecessary to have API documentation. Wish there was a flow as to how the parsing is actually done what methods call what. To find out the flow as a workaround i had to make StringArrayOutOfBound exception and print the stack trace to see whats going on. ( as i see code is not easily understandable in case OOPs languages i mean without documentation ). Wish to make a design of the lpg library atleast so that i dont have to rediscover stuff! There are many public functions in the library or in the jar that comes with lpg distribution, but its not easy to figure out what each one of them does. And sometimes the errors especially parsing errors dont even give a remote hint as to what is wrong!! Man i am feeling like Amerigo Vespucci now after finishing the first phase of the parser. :)

My name In the Wall Street Journal

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 190px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_UUQK4xzPo2M/Sei1kdUR5GI/AAAAAAAAAqk/3h6NjdA3NVI/s400/ole0.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325706197315216482" />
I was bored and just googled my name then i remembered sometime in 2007 my name had come in the wall street journal because i saw a video of sergey brin published by UCB and commented on it. The WSJ reporter had called me from US and took my telephonic interview and asked me my opinion about the videos.. I dont know why he chose me ( may be impressed with my comment ) which just said " i wish there was more computer science " Thats because at that time there were only a few comp sci videos mainly on Search Engines.. The competition was quite good as i recollect. many students knew that some positions for embedded systems were open and hence were keenly interested in getting through. Well i took up java for test and did quite well and hope to join java team when i am onboard. Havent received a mail or an offer letter from them though, they have informed only our placement department.

Anyway with sony and mindtree as my two companies my placement quota gets over. Hope to get a job @ IBM where i am doing my internship now. The place seems to be cool and at the same time a great place to learn. i like the freedom and the work mainly in IBM as of now.

So with my placement done and tomorrow Dell coming to college i get like a day off as my seminar which was scheduled for tomorrow is postponed. So got some time to scribble something here. To use up my small bursts of time i get i am planning to use micro blogging as an alternative to this, because it doesnt need that much time and i can make twitter appear on this blog too. I am gonna put small things which all my friends should know on twitter and only note worthy and big enough things here.. Here is my twitter id http://twitter.com/shishirmk

Some Things which Ruby shouldn have had..

Ruby is claimed to be designed to make programming fun by concentrating on the logic and not language specific syntax. Ruby is supposed to follow the principal of least surprise ( or least shock as i would like to call it ). I got to see ruby from a very close view because i am writing a parser for it, so i am in the course of understanding the intricacies of ruby's grammar and other aspects. I thought in this post i should put up all the different things which make it a little difficult to use.

1> when calling a function the argument list you send must have a particular order for three different typed of arguments which you can send the three look like this just_name, classname=>field, *varname, &varname. The order is supposed to be as i have written it. so this is like a language specific syntax which should have been avoided if possible.

2>Here Document has a very rigid syntax and has many options so is quite confusing..
Some examples are shown below each of them is correct but has different meanings.
And also there is no space allowed after the "<<" operator and the document should begin in the newline and the ending delimiter should also should be on a newline..
There cannot be any trailing spaces in any of the delimiters. The Whole concept of heredocs in ruby defeats the goal of POLS. Its advisable not to use heredocs as much as possible in ruby code as it makes code difficult to understand and maintain..

print <<"EOF"; # Just Print
The price is Price.
EOF

print <<`EOC` # execute commands
echo hi there
echo lo there
EOC

print <<"foo", <<"bar" # you can stack them
I said foo.
foo
I said bar.
bar

myfunc(<<"THIS", 23, <<'THAT')
Here's a line
or two.
THIS
and here's another.
THAT

if need_define_foo
eval <<-EOS # delimiters can be indented
def foo
print "foo\n"
end
EOS
end

More to come....

A Good Day at Office..

Today was a very productive day at office.. I initially searched for a tool which would make my life a lil better by converting the EBNF format of ruby grammar to standard BNF format without much trouble. But almost dint find anything which really did it without much effort from my side. ( zenspider ) on freenode#ruby-lang warned me but i dint accept. finally i realised that i had to do stuff on my own. Thankfully i got a good link which told me how to do it manually http://lamp.epfl.ch/teaching/archive/compilation-ssc/2000/part4/parsing/node3.html
So settled down and started doing the painful and a bit boring thing. Almost succeeded by deleting major features of ruby as i removed its syntax. Well i am just doing a POC ( Proof of concept ) so it doesnt matter. Finally got the parser generator running without any errors but the JIKES PG has creates very wierd JAVA files where one of the variable is TK_$ and one more as TK_^ eventhough i have aliased them to DOLLARSIGN and XOR respectively.. And there is also a stubborn warning which i dont understand what it means "Escaped symbol $ is an invalid Java variable." i tried to google it with no luck :( . The major problem now as i see it is Jikes PG doesnt have good amount of support. Any one reading this post finds some help with Jikes PG kindly tell me. by commenting below. But still the day was good because i removed all errors which lpg threw out. and i have only these warnings remaining and some important corrections to get it working. I stumbled accross Gmail4Java APi which a developer is writing. I wanted this a lot too so i asked him if i can help him out in doing this he is yet to confirm. Hopefully he accepts and i get to develop such a useful API.

Fever, internals, and a interview on saturday

The week was very hectic to start with but it was even more hectic with the internals and fever with cold coming in simultaneously. But then i was ill so dint do internals tat well as couldnt sit concentrate and learn things.. Took tablets and i am alright today. But today had got a call from novellus for a support engineer kind of post the interview was at 3 but i was called in at around 4:30.!! That was definitely a turn off because i dint have food thinking i will be out by max 3:40. So cpz of the interview had to skipped the lunch today.

The interview was first HR kinda round it was ok basically just briefing about the company and stuff. then i was called in at 4:30 for the real interview. There were two guys in the room one mainly asked me questions which were more of puzzles while the other was noting down things i dont know what he was noting down though.. The puzzles were lil difficult all of them i had heard for the first time. some puzzles were like the snail climbing some well of 24 ft how many days it takes if it climbs x a day and comes down y the same day. x and y were arithmetic series.. well then there was this one which i dint answer the woman going to work from 12th floor of the building which was her house and comes back by lift only to 8th floor and stuff..! There was another one of jars and litres of liquid to be shared in them equally and stuff.. There was another one of the bridge crossing ones, and one on the 2 father 2 sons went to fishing and returned with 3 fishes even though everyone caught one why??

They asked some C programming and programming practices and why the practices are necessary kinda questions.. the interview was for 40 mins approx and they said they will get back to me by Tuesday max! Lets hope for the best!

Where i am now..

Things have changed after i have written my previous blog entry.. Anyway I have switched from SWS (Semantic Web Services) to Ruby and JikesPG and stuff about it. Now i am Interning in IBM India Software Labs , Java Technology Centre, FTP, WhiteField Bangalore. Three days of the week i am here in office that is on monday, tuesday and wednesday. Its long way from where i live so travelling is around 3hrs 30 mins everyday. I am almost used to this routine now. Lot of things i had to get used to <20C room temperature and machine made coffee to name a few..

Those things apart. I am building a Ruby Parser here using JikesPG. I spent a week around ruby and enjoyed it throughly, I can almost say i fell in love with ruby. Then a week went in understanding the Jikes Parser Generator. Its actually part of a PhD thesis written by the guy jike or someone. Basically now its an open source IBM offering as i see it! Its a cool generator which takes in BNF grammar and lots of configs to give me the parser in java. But then again its left to me what i do with the parsed AST(Abstract Syntax Tree). The project seems definatley challeging to me atleast considering i dont have any experience / course background in compiler design as such..

Participating in VTU's penultimate Mugging Marathon

I had been to my native from 5th till today... All the different factions are gathering up arms and ammunition and getting ready.. Thats a comic line actually looking in a particular Perspective.. Because some of the companies are in all the major factions!! Well the three new competitors in the mobile phone OS industry will be..

1.Google's ANDROID ( LINK )
2.Nokia's Symbian ( NEWS LINK ) soon to be made open source..
3.LiMo foundation ( LINK ) the embedded linux based OSes consortium.. well but LiMo is a middleware platform unlike the other two..

So lets see who makes the first move... Everyone has got one or the other advantage... Everybody's handset alliance has all the big names.. ofcourse Nokia's name is only in Symbian consortium if i am not wrong.. Motorola is in all three.. I wonder what windows will do.. When everyone becomes open source i dont think windows will have much scope in the competition unless they startbuilding there own "Zuneyphones".. Or something more creative something like the iphone and takeover the industry...

HOW fast is PUPPY LINUX 3.10

I have a modest dual core 2.8ghz 1gb ram 160gb hard disk personal computer.. the puppy linux is loaded onto a hard disk partition. the os loads in less than 30 secs and it shuts down in 20 secs.. thats the speed compare it with almost more than a minute incase of ubuntu or more in case of windows. the loading of desktop and startup doesnt take even the shortest amount of time. you will love the speed.

The great puppy linux..

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_UUQK4xzPo2M/Ry3euCc1U-I/AAAAAAAAAUk/jBJyPcsg4cE/s320/screenshot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129000433158018018" />
I am trying out this cute little puppylinux 3.10.. Its just 99 Mb and has loads of features. which are according to me enough for a general end user. it has less eye-candy the major tools which may impress us are. it has seamonkey browser, text editor, document editor, spreadsheet creater,image editor, media players, codecs for many softwares, torrent client,messenger(gaim)all lightweight form put here. many more applications are there which might interest you. well the most important feature that impressed me the most was the tweakability of the os.. even the booting is completely under your control. so now on i willl tweak many things in this os and make it personalised! well it would be a crime if i didnt mention this os is as fast as an f1 car. it just zooms. so much so that even double clicking is a time waste here!! what i have written here is just the tip of the ice berg to experience it and knw more about it www.puppylinux.com or www.pupplylinux.org

The new XFCE 4 soft on resources hard on performance..

Hi i tried the XFCE 4 desktop for the new Ubuntu Gutsy gibbon 7.10.... the Xfce 4 is very good now more user friendly than before... it looks simple but the desktop loads faster than another available for the Ubuntu 7.10.. Its got new features like a new pannel with many options to be loaded into to it.. has small and cute icons.. You can change the appearance and icons with default options available.. Has a list of softwares makes it easy.. Its almost similar to the gnome desktop but light on resources.. a screenshot of the Xfce desktop i have will be posted as the next post.. enjoy the rat!!

Powered by ScribeFire.

GUTSY GIBBON UBUNTU 7.10 release review this is a very nice review please check it out

I stumbled across this great review of the gutsy gibbon.. it tells how much the Ubuntu developers listen and heed to the complaints and suggestions of their most smart users.. "Think smart think UBUNTU" here is the review link http://tech.tolero.org/blog/en/linux/review-ubuntu-710-gutsy-features-changes

Powered by ScribeFire.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_UUQK4xzPo2M/RyMRuCc1U8I/AAAAAAAAATM/VOgfPZEco3A/s320/screenshot1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5125960283507217346" /> click on the image to get a better look at it
"THIS IS WINDOWS XP" hey guys i modified xp to look like this after i read in some site how to do it for FREE!! I wanna say its awesome fellas... its fast cute and efficient.. what else do you want from an application like this one.. It is like any typical blogger application... opens in the browser as a tab or a window or a split screen! you have to add your blogs here first with your username and password... then just go on blogging guys.. supports text formatting and image formatting.. you can add more than one blogs and post in each separately.. well this is good enough info for anybody to try this.. anyway for for further info i will also post a screenshot later on if anybody requests http://www.scribefire.com

Powered by ScribeFire.

Indians develop new iron using ancient technology

Author: K.S. Jayaraman
Publication: IndiaeNews.com
Date: October 13, 2007
URL: http://www.indiaenews.com/technology/20071013/75049.htm

Indian metallurgists have developed a type of corrosion-resistant iron that construction engineers would love. And vital clues for it came for Delhi's famous Iron Pillar that has been standing tall for over 1,600 years.

Developed by Ramamurthy Balasubramaniam and his former student Gadadhar Sahoo of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kanpur, the iron contains phosphorus and shows remarkable resistance to corrosion, especially in concrete.

'This is a significant first step in the possible commercial (large-scale) use of these irons,' Balasubramaniam, better known as Bala, told IANS.

Most steels today contain small amounts of carbon and manganese. Modern steel makers avoid phosphorus because its segregation to grain boundaries makes the steel brittle.

But the IIT team successfully produced ductile phosphoric irons by driving the phosphorus away from grain boundaries through clever alloy design and novel heat treatment.

Ironically, Bala's material is not new. It was being made by Indian ironsmiths centuries ago. Bala says he got the clue for developing this material from the six-tonne seven-metre tall Delhi Iron Pillar - a major tourist attraction in the Qutb Minar complex -- that has been standing for centuries in the harsh weather of the capital without any corrosion.

'As a metallurgist, I was intrigued,' Bala told IANS. And his passionate quest to unravel the mystery that began in 1990s has now culminated in phosphoric irons.

The test samples developed by the IIT team remained fresh after three months of being immersed in solution, simulating the corrosive concrete environment, whereas the best commercially available steels got rusted. In another experiment, they embedded the samples in concrete to simulate actual conditions and obtained similar results.

'The work is especially important in regard to the widespread use of steels in civil structures,' said Gerhard E. Welsch, professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio).

'The recent bridge collapse in Minneapolis has added new urgency,' Welsch said in a congratulatory message to Bala. Seven people died when the bridge across the Mississippi river collapsed Aug 2, 2007.

Current philosophies to tackle corrosion in concrete include the addition of inhibitors to the cement mix, use of rebars that are galvanised, epoxy coated, or micro-alloyed by the addition of small amounts of chromium, copper and nickel -- elements that are known to induce passivity in iron.

Their high cost is a disadvantage, says Bala. 'Besides, we have experimentally shown our phosphoric irons perform better.'

Bala's real break came when he found that the iron used in the Delhi pillar contained elevated amounts of phosphorus -- as much as 0.25 percent against less than 0.05 percent in today's iron. He found this was a result of the ancient process where iron ore is reduced in a single step by mixing it with charcoal, without any limestone addition.

Modern blast furnaces, on the other hand, use limestone yielding molten slag and pig iron (high in carbon) that is later converted into steel. Most phosphorus is carried away by the basic slag.

Further studies and analysing rust from the pillar showed that phosphorus catalysed the formation of a protective passive film on the surface of the pillar that acted as a barrier between the metal and rust.

Tanjore Anantharaman, author of the book 'Delhi Iron Pillar - the Rustless Wonder' and Bala's former teacher at the Benaras Hindu University, says phosphorus was long suspected to be behind the pillar's corrosion resistance. 'It was Bala who proved it.'

That was in 2000. Actual material development and corrosion tests were initiated in 2003 when Sahoo joined Bala for his PhD that he completed in 2006.

'Our papers based on the thesis are coming out now,' Bala said. All the work, he said, was done with institute funds without any external support.

'Certainly, we are not claiming that this is the end of our studies,' admits Bala. 'We have shown the usefulness of phosphoric irons for concrete reinforcement applications. Now it has to be taken up by more researchers for greater understanding.'

Bala thanks his forefathers for the success. 'I am of the firm belief that ancient Indian metallurgists had the empirical knowledge that high phosphorus content ores resulted in corrosion-resistant iron. They did not create this material by accident.'

Kaffeine is a great Music player

The basic thing which impressed me is the file explorer beside the player.. you dont have a window popping up everytime like winamp.. ofcourse.. it doesnt have the presets and stuff which winamp has.. To install go to synaptic package manager and then type freeloader in search then install as usual!!

hey guys i did this... i had ubuntu on my system i wanted to dual boot with xp.. so i installed xp..
it rewrote the mbr.. i lost grub boot loader... i recovered it later on using ubuntu live cd i will tell you how to do it...

Code:

sudo grub

This will get you a "grub>" prompt (i.e. the grub shell). At grub>. enter these commands

Code:

find /boot/grub/stage1

This will return a location. If you have more than one, select the installation that you want to provide the grub files.
Next, THIS IS IMPORTANT, whatever was returned for the find command use it in the next line (you are still at grub>. when you enter the next 3 commands)

Code:

root (hd?,?)

Again use the value from the find command i.e. if find returned (hd0,1) then you would enter root (hd0,1)

Next enter the command to install grub to the mbr

Code:

setup (hd0)

Finally exit the grub shell
Code:

quit

That is it. Grub will be installed to the mbr.
When you reboot, you will have the grub menu at startup.

Now the explanation.
Sudo grub gets you the grub shell.
Find /boot/grub/stage1 has grub locate the file stage1. What this does is tell us where grub's files are. Only a small part of grub is located on the mbr, the rest of grub is in your boot folder. Grub needs those files to run the setup. So you find the files and then you tell grub where to locate the files it will need for setup.
So root (hd?,?) tells grub it's files are on that partition.
Finally setup (hd0) tells grub to setup on hd0. When you give grub the parameter hd0 with no following value for a partition, grub will use the mbr. hd0 is the grub label for the first drive's mbr.
Quit will exit you from the grub shell.

Ubuntu Magazine

Guys i found this extremely useful magazine on Ubuntu Linux please download it and get benefited.
"Let Ubuntu Over throw the tyrant and the mighty" support this linux distro as much as possible. lets join in the revolution
<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;
